- Read Johnson, Allan G. 1988. Chapter 1, "Where are We? What is This Thing
Called Patriarchy?
- Read "The Yellow Wallpaper?" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
- Do Reader Response 1: What does Gilman's story teach readers about gender
roles and patriarchy in 1892 America? Connect this to chapter 1 of Johnson's
book. Include a quote from Johnson and from Gilman. Response must be min.
of 2 pages.
W 8/28 Gender as a Structure; Binary vs. Becoming; FW: Simone de Beauvoir
once stated that "one is not born, but rather becomes a woman." What do you
think she may have meant by that? Discuss Gilman story.
HOMEWORK (DUE 9/4):
- Read "Why I Wrote the Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman
- Read "Read "Running" by Joyce Carol Oates. Handout.
- Do Reader Response 2: Oates' and Gilman's stories were written exactly 100
years apart. What differences do you notice in regard to gender and women's
roles? Do you notice any similarities? If so, why do you think these are
significant?

a woman who has power is feared." What is the significance of that statement?
